Summary: Steve at the opening night of his Smithsonian exhibit.
Notes: For ~yeetresponsibly, who has proven that we don't need to work together in order for him to feed me fic ideas. I love and hate you.
Written for a few challenges: Fandom Snowflake Challenge on DW and the Genuary Fic Event on Tumblr. This was a response to my own lyric challenge I created for Snowflake, with the song lyric: When the last of your friends have gone, you learn a whole lot about hanging on and on. from "House in the Trees" by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness.
“Captain America: The Living Legend & Symbol of Courage,” the sign out front proclaimed. Steve snorted. The only thing legendary about him was the fact that he lived, long after he should have died.
He walked past signs showing his height, before and after the serum, followed by a replica of a motorcycle he’d ridden. The walls were decorated with stories of his victories throughout the war. Steve didn’t read them. He didn’t have to. He already knew what happened.
And then he saw the uniforms.

Challenge #9
In your own space, brag about yourself. Tell us what things you've done that you're proud of; the things that make you the wonderful person you are.
Oof. It's always hardest to talk about yourself, isn't it? We're so conditioned to temper ourselves, to hold back, that when given the opportunity to shout from the rooftops, it can be hard to find things to talk about.
So screw it, I'm gonna at least try.
♥ Last year I became a municipal liaison for NaNoWriMo, mostly because I really love my writing group and wanted to be able to help in some way. Throughout October and November of 2020, I led three two-hour long calls on Discord a week. And people showed up, session after session. We got to talk writing and write together and while our sessions are quieter now, we're still chatting and writing away. I learned that, yes, I can put these things together, and yes, I can lead the group, which makes it easier to do in my "everyday" life as well.
♥ I have finished complete drafts of three original novels. Are these drafts the best? No. Are these ideas salvageable? Yes. What's important is that I finished them, and I learned from them, and my next efforts will be better.
♥ I am writing for me, and the things that make me happy.
♥ I have managed to keep a bi-weekly posting schedule for Angel of Mine and am currently a chapter ahead on editing!
♥ I have two kids who are growing up to be awesome humans, curious and smart and (mostly) polite and definitely sassy as fuck.
♥ After years of putting it off and feeling as though things weren't "bad enough" to matter, I finally started addressing my lifelong anxiety. It's a long road, but I am worth it.
♥ I am more than enough. And so are you, whoever is reading this.

In your own space, create your own challenge.
Anyone up for some writing prompts? Some of my favorite prompts come from song lyrics, and some of my favorite lyrics come from my favorite band, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, and his previous bands, Something Corporate and Jack's Mannequin.
So! Pick a lyric, write a snippet, and I hope you find something that inspires you! Any fandom/ship is game. ♥ Tag me (I'm also wingsyouburn on AO3 and tumblr) or link me so I can read what you came up with!

Challenge #4
In your own space, create some goals.
It just occurred to me that I never posted my 2021 goals to my DW, so this is as good a time as any!
( goals under here! )

Challenge #3: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
In your own space, tell us who, from one of your fandoms, would you most want to have dinner with (or tea, or a random afternoon visit), And why? This could be a creator, an actor, a costumer, a set designer, a director, a character, a composer, anybody! What would you talk about? What are you dying to know?
So I had to think on this one a bit. I have several writers I would love to have over - the ones who I have subscribed to, whose works I've read over and over again, just so we can chat about writing and fandom and our stories and you know, just hang. I would like to be able to hang with my writing group again at some point, when it's safe to do so.
But the big one, I think, would be Carrie Fisher.
She was supposed to attend Rhode Island Comic Con a few years before her death and she ended up having to cancel. I remember telling my partner that it would be so hard to wait in line with both him and our son (who was a toddler at the time), but I would do it for Carrie Fisher. As she didn't attend, at the time I always thought there would be another chance to meet her.
And then she passed away.
I'm sure everyone has a story about Princess Leia and what she meant to them as a character. For me, I remember being eight years old and watching The Empire Strikes Back on VHS (taped from TV, so part of the Hoth scenes is missing). There was this woman, not much bigger than me, standing in front of these pilots and taking charge and telling them what to do. She didn't have to listen to anyone. She led the rebellion and even when things went south, she still took charge.
And then, as I got older, the way Carrie spoke of her mental illness resonated with me. As someone who's struggled with anxiety all my life, I was determined to accept that this is just "the way I am" and there wasn't anything I could do about it. I was wrong. Carrie helped me see that. She also helped me see that it was okay to be just as I am, flaws and all, and to be proud of what made me unique.
I'm not going to say that I'm ever going to manage my anxiety 100 percent. I do know that I'll never get the chance to tell Carrie thank you face to face, but I like to think she knew the impact she had on the world. So, thanks Space Mom, the General. You inspired my generation and the ones who come after me, too. ♥

Challenge #1
In your own space, introduce yourself!
Oh hi, I'm Amie! Writer, barista, roleplayer, daydreamer. I've been hanging around fandom for a while now. I started off with a second hand laptop writing bad fic in notebooks and deciding that, hey! If I'm going to spend this much time on the Internet, I should post some of my writings!
(No, you don't get links to my ff.net past.)
I took some time off from writing for fandom after college, so determined that I was going to write something "real" and get published. I still work on original stories and I do want to get those published someday, but in the meantime, I'm writing the things that make me happy. Currently my major works are Angel of Mine, a Stucky/OC MCU angels AU, and A Hero Lies in You, which is still in edits, a Power Rangers/MCU crossover. I also love writing one shots for fic exchanges!
I am also a mom of two kids, both of whom are super creative in different ways. I ended up co-president of my son's PTO, not really by choice. And I am a municipal liaison for NaNoWriMo. ♥

Challenge #12
Commit an Act of Kindness (or two or three ♥ ).
I think it's perhaps cheating to say that my act of kindness this weekend was for myself, but it's true.
I got sick last week. I work retail and deal with people all day long, plus have two young kids who are walking petri dishes. It's going to happen. Usually, my way of handling this is to pop a bunch of DayQuil and pray that it passes quickly. Push through my shifts, and I can rest when I get home.
This time, though, I did the thing. I asked for help.
I never ask for coverage for my shifts. Most of the time, it is nigh impossible to find someone to take a shift, especially since 1. I have keys to my store, and thus can't just ask anyone to come in, and 2. I open, and no one likes being at the store early. But Matt took one look at me, told me that yes, he would come in and open, and that I should go the fuck home.
Then I texted two other people, both of whom agreed to come in early so the store had coverage.
I would still be sick right now if I didn't have Saturday off to rest. Granted, I still have a cough, but I no longer feel like walking death. I need to remember that it's okay to take this time for myself, that I need to get better, and I won't be able to do so when I'm too busy running myself into the ground.
As a second act of kindness, I finished an additional treat as part of

Challenge #11
In your own space, recommend a fannish or creative resource.
My recommendation is... each other.
No, seriously.
I remember when I first started playing Final Fantasy in high school. I got VII and VIII around the same time, and all of my friends had played it before I did. To their credit, no one mentioned a thing about Aeris' fate until I came to school and told them what happened. My friend Laura was literally a walking resource of all things FFVIII. Instead of using a guidebook, we passed notes about video games.
She taught me how to find the Card Queen. How to properly play Triple Triad. How to find the Master Fisherman, how to find the Island Closest to Heaven and Island Closest to Hell, how important it was to complete all your sidequests before tackling Lunatic Pandora. I learned so much and it was the first time in my high school life that I felt accepted by these people I hung out with, because they were willing to help me play their favorite game ever.
Fandom is much the same way. Making those connections, being able to discuss meta with each other and exchanging those ideas back and forth, makes for a wholesome fandom experience. Wikis are good for looking up details (for example, I have abused the fuck out of RangerWiki as I drafted A Hero Lies In You, and that's still not as complete as I'd like) but it pales in comparison to talking with someone who loves the same things you do.
So. Help out a fellow fan. As an introvert and known lurker, I'll attempt to do the same. And hopefully all of our experiences with our fandoms will be better for it. ♥

Challenge #10
In your own space, talk About A Creator/Someone Who Inspired You.
( in which I ramble a bit. )

Challenge #9
In your own space, promote at least one canon that you adore (old, new, forever fandom).

You know what didn't get a ton of love? The 2017 Power Rangers reboot.
The thing I love about this is that it is a genuine reboot of the series. These characters are not the goody two shoes Power Rangers we grew up with. They're flawed, they're facing real problems, and they actually feel like teenagers as they learn and grow with these new abilities they've found. While it took me a while to come around to these new versions of these characters, I now love them as much as I adore the original canon.
A small breakdown:
Jason - former quarterback, under house arrest for pulling off a prank at school and leading the cops on a chase through Angel Grove, with a host of daddy issues;
Kim - former cheerleader, in detention for leaking nude pictures of another student;
Zack - local thrillseeker who is trying to avoid the reality that is his mother's illness and responsibility of being her sole caretaker;
Trini - new girl in school who never feels like she'll fit in, questioning her sexuality;
and Billy - autistic smart kid with a heart the size of Texas who loves being a Ranger
I would die for these characters, legit. In my personal writing, it's been a lot of fun to take this version of characters and weave in references to the original series in a way that feels fresh and new. I hope others will have as much fun with it, too!

Challenge #8
Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.
( Just three? There are lots of works to love! )

Challenge #7
Promote/Rec/Sing the Praises of Yourself!
♥ I can bake.
A decade ago, cupcakes really became a big thing and I got a copy of Hello, Cupcake! and all I wanted to do was make pastries for days and days and days. I can make a lot more than just cupcakes now, and my kids have started asking for special cakes for their birthday parties and such. For Gabby's third birthday in November, I made a rainbow surprise cake that came out beautifully. When you cut into it, M&Ms and candies spilled out from inside. Granted, I'm now on a low carb diet (which suuuuuucks because bread is one of my favorite things to eat and make) so I can't bake nearly as much as I used to. Still a skill I have in my back pocket.
♥ I'm great with grammar.
When I write my own pieces, I'm generally good at catching most grammatical mistakes as I go. In editing, I only catch one or two typos. When I beta read for others, grammar is usually the thing I can help with the most.
♥ I crochet.
Last year I did two craft fairs and made $300 towards my Christmas presents. It's not a lot of money, but it brings me a lot of joy. It's even more fun when I can make some nerdy references in my work, like dragon egg dice bags and Avengers-themed baby bibs. The Captain America one I made finally sold this fall, which was great.
♥ I cosplay.
I haven't been able to do a proper one for myself for a couple years now, thanks to having kiddos, but I have made a bunch of cosplay pieces over the years. My favorite is making Squall's SeeD ball uniform and Rinoa's white party dress with

Challenge #6
In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, or that you'd like someone to make for you. Are you dying for podfic of your writing? Do you need icons for a character that doesn't get much fanart? Is there a story you want to read? Are you looking for new canons to get into? Would you like a collaborator for a project?
Maybe you want more people to talk about a certain fandom with, or you'd love to trade ficlets with somebody over email. Maybe you're new to a fandom and would like some recs to start reading, or communities to join. This is the time to ask!

Challenge #1
In your own space, introduce yourself!
Oh hi. I'm Amie! I am also late to the game, but you know, this sounded like fun.
As the bio says, I am a writer, barista, baker, daydreamer, mom, INFJ, the most Virgo to ever Virgo that you will ever meet. I've been writing for as long as I can remember, from little stories I would write for my father to filling notebooks upon notebooks in order to get these stories out of my head. The long running joke is that, because I'm a writer, of course I work in a coffee shop, since those seem to go hand in hand.
I have two kids, Quentin and Gabrielle, who are 6 and 3, respectively. I'm trying to be the best mom I can and encourage them in ways that help them grow while still being the incredibly unique individuals they are. Q is my long-haired rock star who wants to be a paleontologist when he grows up. Gabby's entire personality can be summed up by the "hold my beer" meme.
I've been involved in fandom in some way for the last 15+ years. My current fandoms lean more towards the MCU, Power Rangers, and Final Fantasy (especially X, VI, and VIII), but I'll always write for Highlander and Star Wars. I used to be
