Challenge #9
In your own space, promote at least one canon that you adore (old, new, forever fandom).
You know what didn't get a ton of love? The 2017 Power Rangers reboot.
The thing I love about this is that it is a genuine reboot of the series. These characters are not the goody two shoes Power Rangers we grew up with. They're flawed, they're facing real problems, and they actually feel like teenagers as they learn and grow with these new abilities they've found. While it took me a while to come around to these new versions of these characters, I now love them as much as I adore the original canon.
A small breakdown:
Jason - former quarterback, under house arrest for pulling off a prank at school and leading the cops on a chase through Angel Grove, with a host of daddy issues;
Kim - former cheerleader, in detention for leaking nude pictures of another student;
Zack - local thrillseeker who is trying to avoid the reality that is his mother's illness and responsibility of being her sole caretaker;
Trini - new girl in school who never feels like she'll fit in, questioning her sexuality;
and Billy - autistic smart kid with a heart the size of Texas who loves being a Ranger
I would die for these characters, legit. In my personal writing, it's been a lot of fun to take this version of characters and weave in references to the original series in a way that feels fresh and new. I hope others will have as much fun with it, too!
