Camp NaNo, Day 3

I am officially out of work until at least May 4. Talked to my boss today and he's not even sure we'll reopen then, but we are getting paid for the entire month of April. So I finally felt safe enough to paint my nails. For those outside of food service, nail polish is a health code violation, and I can't do my nails unless I know for sure I'll have the time off.

Jon is also home for all of April. Q isn't back in school until at least May 4, though to be honest, I'll be surprised if he goes back at all. He got to have a classroom meeting via Zoom today, which helped brighten his spirits, since he's been as trapped inside as we are.

Writing wise, I keep thinking of more scenes to add to Seven Seas of Rhye. At this rate, it's never going to be finished, but I got to write this line:

"You fucked Rita Repulsa?!"

So you know, not all is lost, lol.

Okay, so. Actually working on my project now. Rather than working on the scene I'm stuck on, I went back to one that I skipped. Having a scene with nine characters in it is always a challenge, but then I remember that most of the Rangers get to have a lot of funny one liners, which makes it go by pretty fast. Whether or not it's coherent at this stage in the game is a problem for future!Amie.

I also sent a snippet to Matt, who I miss a lot even though he lives literally two feet from my house and we can't hang out and plot together. So instead, we did it over Messenger.

Here's a snippet from today!

“Rangers.” Zordon closed his eyes, dropping his head. In that moment, he looked as old as he sounded. “Things are more complicated that you can imagine.”

Grabbing a chair, Trini straddled it. The way her arms draped loosely over the back betrayed her emotions - her eyes were as calculating as everyone else’s. “Really? Then one of you better start explaining a thing or two.”

“Because it’s Valentine’s Day,” AJ continued. “I know you guys are from another planet and probably don’t have a good grasp on American holidays, but I had plans for this afternoon that didn’t involve anyone but him.” She pointed at Jason.

In spite of himself, one corner of Jason’s mouth quirked up. He knew well what AJ’s plans were, and he wasn’t sure she would have waited until they left the paintball park to act on them.

“And those two,” AJ pointed to Trini and Kim, “had a date tonight too, I’m sure. Tommy was going to hang out with his punching bag-”

“Hey!” Tommy side-eyed his twin, but she ignored him.

“I was going to be cooking dinner for my mom!” Zack chimed in.

“And I don’t do Valentine’s Day,” Billy said, shrugging. “I was going to hang out and build robots.”

AJ propped one hand on her hip. “And you ruined Billy’s robot time.” She fixed her gaze on Zordon. “So yeah. We need an explanation.”

If nothing else, writing snappy dialogue entertains me.
A writing update!

I've made my project for April's round of Camp Nanowrimo. To no surprise, it's to keep working on Seven Seas of Rhye. I may not finish the story this round, but I would love to make some good forward progress, like I did in November. If I keep chipping away at it, eventually the final words will be "The End."

And then I'll have to edit. *sobs forever*

My goal for March is to finish any scenes that I started and didn't get to because of time/lost muse/etc. I'm down to four scenes like this, and one of them just needs a couple paragraphs to finish it out. It's okay if it sucks. I can fix things like transitions in the first round of edits, and some things need to be shifted around anyway. It's a draft. The point right now is just to finish the fucking story so I can move on to drafting something else.

I also wrote a sequel to Left Your Mark On Me, my Rydia/Yuna crossover! I've been playing a lot of Final Fantasy Record Keeper, and a lot of the early levels are all Final Fantasy IV based, and... yeah. The muse bit. I have the next oneshot planned out for this series (because of course it's a series now) and hopefully will start edits on the one I just finished this week. Tentative title for the new fic is When A Heart Knows Fear.

Yahtzee has started at [community profile] getyourwordsout, and I'm really excited about this round. I choose picture prompts this time, since I struggled with the word prompts offered last year. I've got a couple ideas, for both fic and original works. I may write something for So Boycott Love, or at least in that universe!

That's all I've got for now. Hoping this creative energy I have right now will lead to a productive March as I ramp up for Camp Nano!

Challenge #4

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

I still don't know if WIP Wednesday is a thing I'm going to keep doing in the long run, but today I have things to talk about, so hey, what the hell.

NaNo is going pretty well actually, considering all the things I have to do this week. It's book fair week, so I'm at Q's school two nights this week (since no one else wants to be there the whole time) which cuts into my writing time. I'm ahead on word count because between this and the craft fair next weekend, my hands are full.

I decided to try and write out the prom/Island of Illusion section of Seven Seas of Rhye, and I'm doing pretty well in that regard. I've also been able to go to write ins with a lot more frequency - my writing group is pretty decent, and we give away prizes for whoever writes the most during the meeting. I've won two Sundays in a row! XD I also ended up with three weekends off in a row (two I requested, one as a bonus) so that's helping tremendously.

Last Sunday I managed to draft a rough version of the fight with Dramole that sends the Rangers to the Island of Illusion. I hadn't gone back to read it because I know it's really rough - most of my fight scenes are, but at least I'm through it - and I found this passage to be particularly hilarious.

look, I had to destroy the Megazord somehow and melting it just seemed like the best option when you're doing word sprints )

In other news, I think I'm going to restart my [community profile] hlh_shortcuts assignment. I still adore my original idea, but I'm not sure it suits the recipient as well as I'd hoped. Also, I'm second guessing everything again, which doesn't help.

I also signed up for Yuletide, and holy shit. I am so hyped for my assignment. I hope it comes out as good as I want it to be in my head.
WIP Wednesday!

My writing is all over the place this week. With the major edit to A Hero Lies in You finished, and my [community profile] hlh_shortcuts assignment yet to come in, I'm kind of floundering, letting myself write whatever. I've written a little bit for Ninjetti, some AU stuff, started another Steve/Darcy AU that's probably not going to go anywhere, but it was fun to write down some details. That one was art history major!Steve and pre-law!Darcy sharing a building on campus and like... idk, maybe I blocked out more of my memories of college than I originally thought I did, because it sounds awkward.

I'm still striving to finish up all the random scenes I started in Seven Seas of Rhye (formerly Ninjetti) before NaNo starts. One of them is the scene where the Rangers basically tell off the feds in a handful of different languages. It's a scene that I've seen in my head for months now but is proving more difficult to get on paper than I thought it would be. Here's a snippet!

in which Jason has to speak for the entire group because he's the only one who only passed Spanish because he was quarterback at the time )

I'm like 2/3 through my final re-read of A Hero Lies in You. Most of the changes I'm making now are minor ones, and I'm going to save anything major (like adding scenes) for draft two, when I can discuss things with Runic, Meghan, and Matt and what their thoughts are about certain scenes/characters. I've been pushing myself so hard for so long that I feel like doing something wrong if I don't have something major to work on right now. This feeling will fade, and I know it's looped into my anxiety, but it's not making me feel any better.

Maybe I just need to remind my mind that it's okay to take a break every once in a while, too.
Guys. Guys.

I FINISHED THE FIRST EDIT!!!!!!

I'm hoping to put in the final edits this afternoon, barring my kids' behavior (I love them, but sometimes need more attention than others, and that's good too!). Then I'll do one more readthrough to see how the edits sound now that it's all done, make my list of questions for Runic as well as a "cheat sheet" on canon, and then away it goes!

And then I swear to fuck I'm not touching that shit until January. I want to post it but it's going to need at least one more good revision (pending on what comes back, I may just be rewriting fight scenes, idk yet) and I need a break from it. I'll have NaNo to hammer out Ninjetti.

And speaking of Ninjetti - it also has a title now! It's now Seven Seas of Rhye after the Queen song. The lyrics fit so perfectly.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh so happy, but still have so much left to do. Gotta make myself focus.
