I finished the first draft of the sequel to With These Hungry Eyes at write in today!

I ended with a final word count total of 51,583 words. Considering that I estimated the story to be between 50-60k when I wrote the outline, that's right on target! I also broke it up into 20 chapters, but I may end up combining some of them later on. I'm still not good at figuring out where chapters should go anyway. *shrug*

This is the first time I've outlined a big fic completely, from start to finish, and that let me blast through scenes faster than I initially anticipated I would. Doing word sprints also helped - I may keep those up going forward, if only as a way to balance writing new words with editing the other ones.

The fic's current title is What's Meant To Be (Will Always Find A Way), after Trisha Yearwood's "She's In Love With The Boy." That may change between now and publishing it in November, but we'll see what happens.

My current plan is to let it sit for the next two weeks, at least, before doing initial edits. Then I'll send it to Bailey so they can look it over for any major plot overhauls. I'm not terribly worried about line edits, as I'm good with those, and I'm hoping my detailed initial outline means I caught the plot stuff on the outset. Either way, I can't start editing it now because it's still too fresh.

I'm doing great on this, timeline wise. The rough draft is due September 21 and I would love to have edits to Bailey before then. Ideally, let's set a goal of September 1 for edits, but that can change.

Next up: My Press Start fic, which has a title and a general idea, and that's more than I have when I start most exchange fics.
I should really get better at updating this journal more regularly.

Anyways! Camp NaNo for July is over. I ended the month with 58,032 words. This is well over my initial goal of 35,000 words, which I attribute to two things: one, my vacation and my writing retreat days, where I wrote 11k over the course of two days; and two, hosting word sprints for my NaNo region. We decided against doing full write ins on Discord, since they weren't that popular, but I did have some people pop on for the scheduled sprints.

On the story front, I am almost finished with the first draft of the sequel to With These Hungry Eyes. I am seven scenes away from the end - assuming, of course, I don't feel the need to add anything extra. This is the quickest I have drafted anything this long since I cranked out the first draft of A Hero Lies in You in 2019, which was slightly longer in length and took me two months. I'm almost done in three weeks' time, which leads me to believe that I should keep up the word sprints on Wednesdays and Fridays until I finish up.

I also restarted So Boycott Love. I adapted the scene order to fit the Save the Cat! structure, which I hope will strengthen the story. What I found, though, was that it is a heavy story to write. Which isn't a bad thing, but given my mental state sometimes, writing something that's an angst fest 24/7 doesn't always do me any favors. Still, I'm proud I worked on some original stuff, even if I didn't get as far as I hoped.

Hungry Eyes 2 still needs a title too. I keep debating a few options:

- Canyon Moon, after the Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness song; it's one of Julianne/Darill's theme songs and it can apply to the story, but not in a very obvious way
- No Place Like You, after a Backstreet Boys song that also fits
- What's Meant To Be Will Always Find a Way, after "She's In Love With the Boy" by Trisha Yearwood

Eventually I'll need to decide, but probably not until I finish the draft.

Next on my to do list, aside from finishing up this sequel in time so I can actually edit, is my Press Start assignment. I have my idea, and hopefully it won't take that long (lolsob we've heard this before). I am also toying with what ideas I want to work on for November, as I've proven that I can write quickly if I actually outline a story ahead of time.

....I should probably also get back to posting Angel of Mine too. I can give up my "heavy" editing of every chapter and just... fucking do it. I'll get there.
So, I did sign up for [community profile] marvel_bang, working on the sequel to With These Hungry Eyes. And for once in my life, I've actually outlined an entire long fic before I started writing. Like, I know what the ending is already, and how I'm going to get there.

Yeah, I'm surprised too.

I also do not need to wait for Camp NaNo to start again to begin working on this. It's better if I get a head start, so to speak, because my current estimate is that the story will be between 50-60k. I'm going to be here forever, but I don't have that kind of time. What helps, though, is that I have detailed notes about each scene and there's a little bit of flexibility too to change things as I need, which I find helpful. Currently it stands at 26 scenes, chapters to be figured out later.

Since part of the story is taking place in Texas, I dug through Spotify looking for some 80s/90s country songs to help inspire me. This is before modern country music turned into FUCK YEAH, MERICA! and is just pop music with a steel guitar and pisses me off. It's also the stuff I grew up with, and man, there are some kickass female artists from that time.

Amazingly I still remember many, many words to all these songs even though I haven't actively listened to them in well over a decade. I got mad at the first 90s country playlist I found because I needed to know that there was a Mary Chapin Carpenter song on there. Old Reba McEntire and Trisha Yearwood? Sign me the fuck up. The Chicks singing about not wanting to settle down in "Ready to Run"? Is that not the perfect song for Julianne?

Currently the playlist looks as follows: cut to save your f-list )

Don't mind me, I'm just getting nostalgic over music I don't listen to anymore, lol.

On a side note, this beast also needs a title.
