1. Do you write your first draft by hand, or digitally?
Digitally now. I used to write everything freehand, back when I was younger and used to have free time to type things in later. I also used to not edit shit, and the only editing that would occur was when I would type things up, so... there's that. Now I just write on my phone when I'm out or write lines I can't lose on like, pastry bags at work to tide me over until I get home.
2. Do you have a writer’s notebook?
I really want to establish a writer's notebook that I can use for everything. Right now I have notebooks for my two biggest projects (A Hero Lies In You + its sequels, and one for edits on One New Message) alongside my bullet journal.
3. Planner, pantser, or planter?
Becoming more of a plantser as I get older. I can outline in Scrivener when I put my mind to it, or if it's a really big project, but otherwise I jot down a few notes and let my brain do the rest. Sometimes it doesn't follow through, though.
4. What is your favorite place to write?
Panera. But I can't eat hardly anything there anymore, so it's less exciting.
5. What is your least favorite place to write?
Anywhere where people think it's okay to interrupt you when you're clearly working.
6. What is your favorite writer’s drink?
Soy, no water, chai from Starbucks.
7. What do you like to eat when you’re writing?
I am now in the habit of not eating at all when I write (yay having to change my eating habits and not snacking as much, if at all), but right now trail mix hits the spot.
8. Do you like to write where it’s quiet, or with noise? If noise, what kind?
Quiet of the "no one else is awake in my house" variety, or music of my own choosing. Other people talking around me is a no go.
9. Do you have a favorite writing season? (eg. spring, summer, fall, winter)
Not particularly. Probably get more done in the summer, though.
10. Do you make imageboards or storyboards or playlists before you write a story? Do you do them during? After?
I gather inspiration all the time. My Pinterest board for Power Rangers is probably one of my best organized I've ever managed to make. On the other hand, my playlists mean a lot to me, but make no sense to anyone who's listening to them unless I've told you why I put which song on what playlist, lol.
11. How do you feel about worldbuilding?
I wish I were better at it, and I wish I had patience to do more of it before I started writing.
12. How many drafts does your work go through before you’re ready to show it to people or publish?
Depends on what I'm working on. Hero went through extensive edits before it went to beta, and the critiques I'm looking for in this round are all plot/character related. Draft three will address those issues, and then draft four would be line edits - likely done chapter by chapter, right before posting.
I need to get better at editing so I can go back to my original stuff someday and maybe get something published for real. Just.... need to fucking do it, I guess.
13. How do you feel about editors and editing?
Invaluable to the process.
14. What is your favorite part of the writing process?
Daydreaming and brainstorming. And finally getting to write the scene you dreamed of since the beginning.
15. What do you do when you have no inspiration, but have to put something on the page/get that story finished?
Write crap and know you can edit it later. You can edit a shitty page, but not a blank one.
16. What do you do when you have lots of inspiration, but no way to actually sit down and write?
Notes on my hand. Notes on a pastry bag. Notes on my phone.
17. Have you ever dreamed something that ended up in a story?
Shit, I wrote a whole novel based on a dream. Two of them, actually: Seven, which is the first arc of the Imperial Story which is my hot mess of a sci-fi piece, and One New Message.
18. How often do you hit save/back up your work?
I have anxiety. The answer is often. With my PR/MCU fics, I have a friend, Matt, who reads as I go, so every few weeks I'll email him a .pdf of whatever is currently done, and email myself a backup too.
19. What is your favorite punctuation mark?
Probably a colon (:). I've never thought about it before.
20. Have you ever gone to school for writing? Would you?
Technically yes! I have a BA in journalism that I'm not using, I took every undergrad creative writing class offered by my university, and I did my senior thesis in creative nonfiction. Were money/time/job prospects not an object, I would love to get an MFA in creative writing.
21. How do you get better at writing? Do you read articles, blogs, or books about writing for tips and tricks? Watch videos? Make it up as you go along? Something else?
Talk with other writers. Ask about their process and what works for them. Also writing books. But if a book doesn't ring true for you and your writing process, there is no shame in putting it back on the shelf.
22. What’s something you wish you learned earlier as a writer?
First drafts aren't perfect and it's okay to go back and fix things.
23. What is the first thing you remember writing?
My dad used to give me writing prompts as a way to keep me entertained and out of his hair. Of course, his prompts were like, "write about a pencil" and because I was like, 7, I did. In fourth grade we had a daily writing practice, and while other kids goofed off during it, I filled six blue notebooks and wrote chapter stories.
24. What is the last thing you worked on?
A secret thing for Chocolate Box ;)
25. Your perfect writing day would be…
Cafe, headphones, uninterrupted writing time, no deadlines, boundless inspiration.

Awww and I didn't know that about you with your first writing bits! That's so sweet!!!!

Date: 2020-02-14 08:52 pm (UTC)I really ought to frame that quote and put it somewhere so I don't forget it, lol.
So, a bit of background: My parents taught me how to read, write, and do simple math before I started kindergarten. When I actually started school, my teacher had no idea what to do with me because I was too far ahead. So I got handed a lot of "extra" things to do while the other kids caught up. My dad would also just give me literal sheets of math problems to do, too, to keep me busy. I preferred the stories.
I am also pissed that those fourth grade journals are lost to time, because damn it, those were my first chapter stories and I managed to keep track of them for a long time and now they're gone. :(
Not a problem! These are fun ♥
