Akane-banashi #191: Ooh, I loved the art there, it was almost like a Junji Ito pageturn jumpscare, that one panel with the eyes. I don't know what Akane grasped, but I'm excited to see how it influences her version of the Shinigami rakugo story.

Harukaze Mound #30 [final]: Aw. I was so ??? when I started it and it started fast forwarding and timeskipping like crazy. I was like, ah fuck, it got cancelled, didn't it? Yup. Last chapter. I'm sad, I thought it was decent!

Hima-Ten!
#75: It feels like things are heading towards a climax of some kind! I really hope it's not a series ending climax, though. I still have no idea how this series is going to get to Himari/Iemori as the endgame as signposted by the title tbh. But it's a nice fun little series I'm still enjoying!

Kagurabachi #109: Oooohhhhhhhh okay, this was such a good chapter. This one definitely feels like a series ending climax, but it's getting so good that I almost don't mind that it's going to finish off the series. At least it had a nice little run? I don't know how to discuss it more without some pretty big potential spoilers... I wonder if what happened is going to stick, or if it's going to get undone with an asspull. I don't think I'd mind either conclusion, but if it sticks, that's pretty gutsy of the mangaka. Excited to see how this continues to unfold!

Under Doctor #1: Potentially interesting concept, but the art is not great and I'm getting the vibe that it's either not going to be very serious, or if it tries serious it's going to be really bad at it. Comes off as kind of half baked. I won't be surprised if it gets cancelled soon; I will be surprised if it gets more than 50 chapters.

Freezing temps have officially hit my area, but I'm safe at home. I called in to work; they don't pay me nearly well enough to risk driving on ice to get there, so I'm using a PTO sick day. On the one hand, at least I'm getting that paltry PTO money, but on the other, I kind of wish that I could waive it and just take an attendance point instead, because I overheard one of the managers say that they're waiving all attendance points for today. The best part about PTO is that because of the union, they can't ever deny it or get you in trouble for using it. That's way more important to me than the what, ~$56 per shift? that ends up in my paycheck. But it is what it is. I haven't called out frivolously since May of last year, and I think my attendance points total is like, 1, which is nowhere near even a warning. And it's not like I plan on taking another vacation after I went on a trip in December and spent sooo much money lol. I can't afford another vacation yet! But yeah, I'm doing fine in the weather so far. I've neither lost power nor had any pipes break yet, as far as I know (apartment complex). I did get a heated blanket to prepare, and it's very warm and cozy! I love it (and so does my cat lol).

Speaking of work, though, the union is apparently very close to bringing up our wages. $2/hour no more! They've asked that employees show up to the next negotiation session, which is luckily on one of my off days, so I think that I'm definitely going to go. The weather should be warm enough by then that it'll be safe to drive down. The raises they're fighting for would give me $200 more to take home a week after taxes. I don't even care about the other stuff they're fighting for, like more PTO and free shift meals and free parking-- that would all be nice, but I'd sacrifice them all in an instant for the raises. I don't know what help I'll actually be at negotiations, especially since I'm a people pleaser who likes to suck up to the bosses, but if the union is asking for employees to show up, I'll show up. They just better not make me do the talking lol.

In completely unrelated news, I started making a list of all of the books and comics and games that I owned but haven't finished yet, thinking that it could help motivate me to finish them. But seeing the big lists is having the opposite effect... I don't like having stuff that I've bought just sit on a shelf (digital or physical), but hmm, treating it as a checklist isn't being very helpful either. Especially since video games make up the lengthiest sublists, but since I've been on a Naruto kick, I haven't really been playing video games-- instead I've been watching anime. I don't want to feel guilty for not playing these games or reading these comics or books, so I don't think the checklist approach is helping. But I do want to actually pick them up! The eternal struggle, I suppose.

Maybe I should make a shorter checklist? Like pick out a few pieces of media per month, and make it my goal that month to read those or play those or whatever. It's a little late for January, but I could pick like one unplayed video game, one unread book, and one or two unopened comic books for February and make it a goal to finish those over the course of the month. I don't think that would be too much.

Okay, then, January media goals:
  • Finish the story mode of Rift of the Necodancer (I'm almost there! On the last chapter)
  • Finish that baihe novel I stalled out on, The Beauty's Blade
  • Catch up again with the Absolute Universe DC titles that I'm interested in (Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, maybe Superman)

And February media goals:
  • Play The Dark Queen of Mortholme
  • Get back to The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy and finish some more routes
  • Start playing Minecraft again (I'm feeling the itch, and it's not part of my backlog but there's no good reason to put it off)
  • Read my omnibus of George Perez's Wonder Woman
  • Finish reading the fifth volume of the 7th Time Loop LN series

Of course, I hope I'm able to get through more of my backlog than just these, but I don't want to make my goals list too large and intimidating. A few video games, a few comic books, one or two novels. And of course I'm going to continue to watch the Naruto anime and play Hollow Knight Silksong, but those are more on my "currently doing" list and not really part of any backlogs I have.

Oh, and thinking about February reminds me that my birthday is coming up! I love my birthday. I should start planning what I want to do. Luckily it's on one of my off days, so no PTO will need to be used. But I definitely need at least a dinner plan of some sort, and maybe a lunch with friends or something.

I'm sure that I must have read or been told this long ago, but I didn't take it fully on board until recently. The BOTW Hero of the Wilds armor (outfit) is the Zelda '86 garb. And we're meant to know that. The elevator pitch for BOTW must have been: "What if the very first game, but with everything today's systems can offer and fans have come to love?"

It dawned on me 400+ hours into The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, as I ran out of ways to delay confronting the Calamity and saying goodbye. When I personally earned the "Hero of the Wilds" outfit and began leveling it up, it hit me. The Wilds set -- green cap, green tunic, brown long-sleeved shirt and short trousers -- is the ultimate tangible reward for exploring (beating all 120 base-game shrines), specifically described in-game as "the warrant of the true hero," "meant for a hero who travels the wild lands," "just your size," "wearing it just feels so right," etc. etc. With the DLC and amiibos, I have found sets for some other distinctive Link outfits from the other games. Their descriptions are not like this. The others emphasize the specific ancient hero who sailed the seas, or battled the twilight, who is not you, the player character in BOTW. This set is in the base game, not bonus material, and it is explicitly for you, you who have traveled the wild lands, just like the first Link from 1986. (Also, unlike most outfits, this one cannot be dyed. And this is the only set that can be leveled up as high as the knight's set. The knight is who the Hero of the Wilds was in the pre-Calamity past; traveling the wild lands is who he is in the post-Calamity present.)

Naturally, of course, one game does not replace the other! Both are on the timeline (cough). BOTW is explicitly and provably long after all the others. And Zelda '86 is known, I believe, to be set wholly in the foothills of the Eldin region, less than a quarter of known Hyrule, aside from all the infinite other differences. But. Both are set in a fallen society, where the surviving people hide from roaming monsters, and Link must search and search and search for how to help bring it the peace to begin to repair itself and emerge from its darkness.

And he does. ♥ Well, if you beat the games. Which I did not do as a child on a relative's console in the '80s, for sure. But will do soon, now.

I went back to bed after Pip left for work and I got the dogs in (for once they were both very eager to get inside!), and slept for another two hours. It felt good.

I did two loads of laundry, hand-washed dishes, ran a load in the dishwasher, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter.

I watched The Pitt, several eps of House Hunters International, and an ep of Lottery Dream House. Dr. Pol was my evening background tv.

Temps started out at -6.9(F); two hours later when I got up the second time it was -10.5. It finally got above 0 at 10am. Temps reached 6. There was some sun, which helped.

Unfortunately, the snow totals have once again gone up. 8-12" Sunday, 5-8" overnight, and about an inch Monday. So much DNW!!

Mom Update:

Mom sounded really good when I talked to her. But I’ve learned that she can fake it for the few minutes we’re on the phone, so I’m hoping she was actually feeling as good as she sounded. She had eaten a couple meals; one of which was better tasting than the other. Sisters A and S both visited (with bonus Toddler A) and my brother also called her.

Author’s summary: John was an elite bodyguard, willing to lay his life on the line in the pursuit of protecting someone whose life was in danger. Then, something happened. And he quit, left his entire life behind to choose early retirement. Now, years later, an old friend has come to ask for his help–a friend of hers is in danger, though he refuses to acknowledge it, and John is her last, best, hope of keeping one Dr. Rodney McKay safe and alive. John reluctantly agrees, as a favor to an old friend, but in the back of his mind, he’s still wondering if he can do this. If he’s lost his edge. It starts off easily enough but then things start slowly escalating. When he starts to fall for the client, when danger hits close to home and memories resurface, can John still do what he’s been trained to do, keep Rodney safe, and protect his heart?

Why This Must Be Read: This compelling story immediately draws you in. It’s an amazing, wonderfully created AU that conveys all their personalities so well and throws them into danger, emergencies, and the expected emotional fallout. Dragonwing really knows how to create suspense and entertainment. Reading their fic is like watching a great movie. And it’s so fun to see how they integrate John and Rodney’s banter, as well as the different characters and their peculiar traits. Every word is a joy to read—every moment and every emotion is so captivating, believable, and in character. And with the whole Atlantis team coming into play, all of this makes you keep forgetting it’s an AU. It’s so good, so exciting, and so familiar! Simply a must-read!

Author’s summary: John wants to try something. Rodney has issues.

Why This Must Be Read: This is one of the gorgeous fics by the amazing WonkyElk, who surprises me every time with the humorous lightness and emotional depth of her writing, and with the intense feelings she’s able to evoke. John’s thoughts about Rodney, and how tender he is with him right from the beginning, feel as if Rodney were his most beloved crystal glass plane—beautiful and fragile, and everything his dreams were made of. WonkyElk describes so sensitively how they get to the heart of the problem: slow and insightful, and with so much love and understanding for each other that it almost hurts! Reading this beautiful fic is almost overwhelming, so wonderful, and such an incomparable experience that you won’t want to miss a single thing!

Author’s summary: John doesn’t say the truth. Not in words. He says it in ritual: the jacket, the pier, the beer. He says it by staying—when Rodney forgets everything but his name, when goodbye is the one thing John refuses to allow, and staying is the only thing he’s ever been sure of.

Why This Must Be Read: I can’t express how much this fic touched me! You experience it through John’s eyes and soul, and it makes your heart pound in your throat. Every single word feels so expressive, so urgent, and just so right. As you read, the episode plays out before your eyes, everything laid bare—each puzzle piece falling into place. It’s not a fix-it yet, but the feelings ring true on so many levels, and reading them fills your heart to the brim. It’s a beautiful fic, and it will stay with you forever.

I had a good day today. Biked to the farmer's market, and then went to the new year's party at my gym. I didn't know gyms had parties, but this one was fun. Friendly people, and several bodyworkers offering free 20 min sessions (I got a massage!) and free drinks from the cafe next door.

I biked over to the ad hoc Balkan and Georgian singing group that meets once a month, and we successfully sang a bunch of songs, even ones that were newer to us or that we hadn't sung in a while, like Tsmindao Ghmerto. Felt great!

Then I got home and caught up on the news. Augh! Via [personal profile] redbird, I was reminded about the Stand With Minnesota site with lots of organizations we can support to help their anti-ICE effort. I donated some money to Just The Pill.

Adding Minnesota Indian Women's Resource Center via [personal profile] ofearthandstars in comments. They are listed under Organizations Doing Work On The Ground.

On the plus side, I'm so glad we are collectively screaming about ICE, not just passively letting it happen. So grateful for the people bearing witness, physically resisting, and sending support from afar.

Let's try this again!

So, I made a DW a few years ago but fell off posting on it pretty quickly. I’ve made this new account in hopes of being more active!

Name: Eclipse

Age: 31

Country: USA

Subscription/Access Policy: My blog is 18+, as I only feel comfortable interacting with other adults, and I do sometimes discuss mature topics. Right now, all my journals are public, but it’s possible I may post some more personal stuff that I might feel more comfortable friends locking. We’ll have to see!

I like to post about: So far, I’m using my journal to crosspost my fanfic and original writing, as well as sharing some of my own rambly thoughts on fandom. My writing tends to focus on monster romance, horror, supernatural stuff, villains, or some combination thereof.

I’m sure I will continue posting my writing and talking about my fandoms, but it’s possible I may also post book reviews or movie reviews.

Main Fandoms: Horror fandom generally, but specifically the Alien movies and the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. My other main fandom interests are: the band Ghost, Beetlejuice, and Phantom of the Opera, as well as the monster romance community.

Other Fandoms: The Stargate franchise, Once Upon a Time, and the Batman villains fandom. I don’t talk about these things quite as much right now, but I still enjoy them and would be happy to follow you if you enjoy these things!

About Me/Other Info: I am in my “cringe but free” era, and as a result, have been writing more OC/self-insert x Canon Character fic – specifically OC x horror villain stuff. If that’s not your thing, this probably isn’t the right blog for you. ^^’

Also, while I generally do not care what people ship, I am very uncomfortable with lolisho.
