Notes: Written for Day 2 of Romancing Barret Week on tumblr, with the prompt: fighting side-by-side. I forget if the bombs grow and explode the way they do in other Final Fantasy games, but hey, it worked for this prompt.

Behind him, Cloud’s sword ricocheted off a metal track as he swung through another bomb. Barret staggered, his knees weakening. His gun arm sagged at his side. His good hand pawed at his pocket. He always had an emergency potion tucked in there… somewhere… didn’t he?

Spots formed at the edge of his vision. He was not blacking out here, so close to home, so close to getting his new family through the dangerous pass.

“Hang on! I’ve got you!”
