Iron Lung

I enjoyed it!

Before I talk about the movie I want to be meta about the whole hype going on right now. The original game it's based on is low poly, low resolution, almost no dialogue, extremely basic controls and only a few interactions. Extremely few assets at all. There is not one pixel more than is needed. It is the epitome of 'minimum viable product'

This is all you see for most of the game:

The game barely even exists even by indie horror standards. This should be a case study in 'finish your projects'.

How long it took the guy to make it, we don't know. AFAIK he's never talked about it. Was this the result of years of thought on minimalism or a weekend fever dream?

Anyway, I enjoyed the film but I don't know how it will hit with people unfamiliar with indie horror games or

IYKYK SCP Foundation.
I don't think this was a project designed to escape containment.

Basically, I expect wont hit with most mainstream reviewers and people outside the scene coming to check it out due to buzz, but the large group of teens in the theater with me gathered in the hallway after to start breaking down all the details.

This is my 2026 New Year’s list.

2026 Wish List. I'll tell you how much I've done.
1. Read at least 15 books. (as of today I've read four books.)
2. Go to my wish list on Amazon and order one thing a month until my hallway bathroom is all new. It's going to be awesome. It'll probably take 8 or 9 months. I'll take pictures when I'm done. (haven't started much yet. Got a toilet paper holder a and that's it so far)
3. I'm tired of red and black in my kitchen. So I will start a new wishlist for kitchen remodel. I don't know if I'll get to it. I decided I still like red. I'm such a spaz )
4. Start a savings account for a trip to Hawaii in 2027. That gives us a year to plan. My brother Pete and his husband Steven are going with us. Pete has been twice. The guys will go on excursions while I swim, walk and visit with people. I can't keep up with them. And they know I'll do fine on the ship. (we have some money saved but it's not looking good. )
5. Make more time for volunteer work. There is no excuse for not doing more. (been volunteering at food bank and at a group home for developmentally disabled adults. I'm familiar with all of them because I used to be the manager. This is more fun for me )
6. Clean my walk in closet out. It's a mess. But I am determined to get it done. (haven't even started yet. I just have to make myself do it.)
7. Try to join one more community on Dreamwidth. They all give me something to do. (I joined about 6 or 7 new communities. I'm looking forward to doing some things. )
8. Work on my six new children books. I have the art so far and the story ideas. I just have to get busy. They're so cute. (Ive got all the art in order, now I just need my children poetry to go with the art. It's harder than it sounds. But I do enjoy it. )
9. Try to write something every night, even if its a threesentenceficathon or drabble. (I've been so busy with Snowflake Challenge that I only have about 7,000 words done on Sentinel fic. But I did finish my SmallFandomBang stories. So that's about an extra 4500 words. I had two to finish. So, I'm happy to be done with it. )
10. Try to find time to watch some decent movies. It's as important as reading to me (I've only watched one at the theaters and it was Rental Family. It was such a sweet little film. A lot of subtitles, but it was worth it. Brendan Fraser did an excellent job. Has anyone else seen it?)

but we ain't friends, we're just morons

Ugh, this week felt like it was EIGHT WEEKS long, and everyone I spoke to at work today agreed. I did not get everything on my to do list done but I don't even care. There was no way I was focusing on much after a 2 hour team meeting. I logged off at 4:45 and took a glorious nap, and then put together the dough for everything bread, which I will bake tomorrow.

In other news, I was so sorry to hear Catherine O'Hara died. RIP. What a legend!

*

I really enjoyed last night's episode of The Pitt. Again, my brain is soup, so I'm not really up for saying much about it, but I did literally yell, "NO!" when the credits rolled. Sometimes I am okay with an episode ending (or at least it feels like it reached a good stopping point) but last night was not one of those times.

This weekend, I will watch the new episode of Shrinking, plus the new episodes of Bridgerton, and possibly I will continue with Pluribus, which I didn't love but kind of want to see why everyone else raves about it. It could click at some point or it could be like Severance, which I also don't love the way many other people do. *hands* Sometimes, that's just how it goes.

Lake Lewisia #1363

With his work going well and a suddenly more comfortable existence, his friends began to ask if he wouldn’t like to buy a newer house, one more attractive and easy to maintain. He just laughed, though, hands brushing fondly over the strange flowering bush by the front steps or the odd blotches staining the front door. “I just love the neighborhood too much to ever leave,” he professed, eyes gazing toward the storm drain opposite his house with an affection no one else understood.

Rushing towards the deadline ...

Today's writing

I have once again reached the "should I just scrap all of this and start over?" point. I tell myself to just keep writing for now; I can still start over and write a whole new story after the deadline. For now, I need to finish this draft so I can post it.

So I keep writing. For now.

Author’s Notes:

Listen, I know the premise of this fic is actually insane, but it somehow works really well.
The 'message crystals' they have work on some form of minor telepathy - they don't 'type' as such. That's all the explanation we are getting :3 Format best viewed on a desktop, but it doesn't matter too much I don't think!

On with the show

Reccer's Notes: Despite the author’s disclaimer, I read this just fine on a $10 3G flip phone.

This freewheeling bawdy Muppet Song turned epic saga got a lot of the fandom through quarantine; I admit to shoehorning it into the “serious” category, but an author (who isn’t writing for pay) doesn’t sustain a story through four years and 132 chapters without putting something resembling thought into it; a skeletal outline of the canon plot (with more survivors and a lot more innuendo) remains faintly visible.

Papers, Please (2013)

In this game, billed as a "dystopian document thriller," you play as a customs official at the border of a fictional country. Each in-game day, you have to process as many entrants as possible, cross-checking their documents for any inconsistencies. Attention to detail is critical, as you're paid for correct checks and fined for violations. But as you continue to play, the number of required documents and the arbitrary rules around them multiply, suggesting the tightening grip of totalitarianism, and making it harder and harder to do well enough to provide for your family.

interface showing overlapping immigration documents, a conversation with a person trying to enter, and silhouettes of people standing in line and armed guards beyond

The story unfolds as a series of ethical quandaries. A woman just wants to visit her son, but she doesn't have the right papers—can you afford to take the financial hit if you look the other way? How would you pay for your son's medicine? An underground revolutionary group wants you to let their agent cross the border, but can you trust them, and what if you get caught? What would your family do then?

Book review: Affinity

Title: Affinity
Author: Sarah Waters
Genre: Fiction, romance, queer lit, historical

I finished my second Sarah Waters book this week after devouring most of it on my flight to Texas and she has surely done it again! This book was Affinity, a much less-talked about one of her novels, which concerns Victorian lady Margaret Prior, who in an effort to overcome her grief for her recently deceased father and a mysterious illness that gripped her around that time, decides to become a "Lady Visitor" to a women's prison: someone who comes to talk with them from time-to-time. She almost immediately becomes enraptured with a young medium, Selina Dawes, doing time for murder and assault.

I don't usually like to do extensive summaries in these reviews, but I want to highlight what USA Today called "thinly veiled erotica" in this book. This book is best approached, I think, with a measure of dream logic (or porn logic, if you prefer), where things can be deeply erotic in concept that in real life would certainly not be. Nothing illustrates this better than the opening chapter of the book.

In the opening chapter, Margaret makes her first visit to Millbank prison. Waters does an excellent job of making the prison itself a terror; a winding maze of whitewashed, identical hallways inside a cocoon of pentagonal buildings set unsteadily into the marshy bank of the Thames within which Margaret immediately becomes turned around. She is passed from the gentleman family friend who first suggested she become a Lady Visitor to the matrons of the women's side of the prison, a realm populated entirely by women. As Margaret passes into this self-contained place which feels entirely removed from the rest of the world (the prisoners are allowed to send correspondence four times a year) she becomes keenly aware of the strange blurring and even erasure of the boundaries, rules, and customs of the outside world. Furthermore, Margaret is reassured over and over again that she is, effectively, in a position of power over all these vulnerable women, trapped in their cells and subject to the harsh rules of Millbank. The prison fully intends for Margaret to be someone for them to idolize and look up to, someone whose attention can make them strive to better themselves. Margaret, a repressed Victorian lesbian, is dropped into this strange realm of only women in which she operates above the rules that strictly govern the rest of them.

It is in this state, after this long journey through Millbank, that Margaret first catches sight of Selina Dawes, and is taken from the start.

The book is not heavy on plot, and some reviewers have called it dull, but I was riveted. The plot is the development of Margaret and Selina's relationship, and the progress of Margaret's mindset on the question of whether Selina's powers or real, or if she's just a very talented con artist. These are by nature things which progress gradually. Practically, it's true that not much happens: Margaret visits the prison. Margaret goes to the library. Margaret has a disagreement with her mother. But her mental and emotional changes across the book are significant.

There are also the vibes. Waters does such a good job of capturing a very gloomy, gothic atmosphere where Margaret (and the reader!) are constantly sort of questioning what's real and to what degree and there's a powerful sense of unease that permeates the entire story. It ties in so well with Selina's role as a spiritual medium and the Victorian obsession with such things; it creates a very holistic theme and feel to the book that I just sank into.

On the flip side of the erotic view of the prison we see early in the book, Waters also uses it to terrifying effect to simulate the paranoia of a closeted gay person at this time in England. As Margaret's feelings for Selina develop and become more explicit, she lives in terror that the matrons of the prison will realize that her interest in Selina is not the polite interest of a Lady Visitor in her charges. She is always analyzing what the matrons can see in her interactions with Selina and what might go under the radar; she is constantly wondering if rude comments or looks from this matron or that is simple rudeness, or a veiled accusation of impropriety. The panopticon pulses around Margaret more and more but she can't keep away from Selina even to protect herself from the danger of being caught.

On the whole, I thought this book was fantastic. I enjoyed it even more than Fingersmith. Waters was really cooking here and I've added several more of her books to my TBR, because she obviously knows what she's doing.

Some more 3 Sentence Ficathon fills I wrote

any, any, too kink to torture: Hundred Line, Yugamu | AO3

read
"Ooh, you've captured me. Whatever will you do with me?" Yugamu asks, already salivating in anticipation. "Will you torture me? Rip my nails out? Show me my entrails? Cut off my limbs, one by one?" Yugamu shivers excitedly, barely able to contain his excitement.

"Uh, Supreme Commander?" the Commander named Murvrum says, turning towards V'ehxness. V'ehxness gives Yugamu a look of contempt and frowns.

"Lock him in one of the cells but treat him well."

"W-well?" Murvrum squawks, and Yugamu's face falls.

"Yes." V'ehxness "He'll be ready to tell us everything in the morning."

any, any, canon is the fix-it: Naruto, Minato | AO3

read
In his last life, Minato had failed. Kushina had been kidnapped by shinobi from Kumogakure, and then the Kyuubi had razed Konoha to the ground, and Minato couldn't do anything except die.

This time, Minato had the mind of an adult shinobi in the body of a young child. He wasn't going to fail Kushina or Konoha this time; he was going to become the strongest shinobi in Konoha.

After, there's a war, and Minato struggles without foresight of the future. He loses Obito, and then Rin. But at least he's alive, and Kushina is still here, too. They're even going to have a child together.

When Minato seals the Kyuubi with the Dead Demon Consuming seal, he knows that he won't get another chance at this life. But he came back to protect Konoha, and even though he failed in keeping Kushina safe again, he can at least protect their newborn son. So Minato dies for a second time, with gratitude in his heart that he had gotten a second chance at all.

any, any, always being the second choice: Hollow Knight Silksong, Lace/Hornet | AO3

read
Lace had been created as a substitute for the Weavers, this she knew. Mother would always prefer the Weavers to Lace. Even long after the Weavers were gone, Mother chased their remnants and descendants even though she already had Lace. This red-cloaked spider was her mother's newest fixation, and Lace had tried to kill her out of spite.

So why did Lace saving her from the Void that she had summoned to swallow Mother? Lace had watched the little spider traverse Pharloom, stirring emotions in her that Lace struggled to name. She realized, as the void dragged her down, that she saved Hornet because Hornet cared. Hornet cared for Pharloom far more than Mother, and more than even Lace herself. Hornet deserved to live; Lace deserved whatever fate awaited her mother.

When Lace surfaced from the Void, she could only look at Hornet. Hornet, who had inexplicably leapt into the Void for her sake. To save Lace, something that she truly had not expected when she intervened to save Hornet from the Void. Of all the beings that Lace had known in her long life, not one of them had ever chosen her first, not until Hornet. Lace knew then, that she would follow Hornet forever, wherever she went, if only for the chance that she could experience this again, the joy of being chosen first.

Queer Ukraine

Queer Ukraine: An Anthology of LGBTQI+ Ukrainian Voices During Wartime edited by the DVIJKA Collective was excellent.

This contains 12 texts: essays on queerness in Ukraine and on transness through Ukrainian History, testimonies and poems about the war. (It's hard to say without author bios, but I feel like women are under-represented.)

Proceeds from the sales of this book go to a selection of charities supporting LGBTQI+ people in Ukraine. The list is periodically reviewed so that funds go to where they're most sorely needed.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge #12

The 12th [community profile] snowflake_challenge prompt is to make an appreciation post for the people who make your fandom experience better. I kinda hate this, because I know I'm gonna fuck up and leave someone out, but here's the people who initially came to mind.

  • [archiveofourown.org profile] DerRumtreiber for introducing me to fandom and for literally prompting me to pick up my pen and start writing after a 19-year hiatus and being my biggest cheerleader ever since
  • [personal profile] green for the collabs and general cheerleading and just overall making my life more fun
  • [archiveofourown.org profile] magpie_bbq for the cheerleading and ideas and always encouraging my tiny gremlin muse
  • [tumblr.com profile] renmackree, [tumblr.com profile] rugbertgoeshome, and Aly for the sprints
  • [tumblr.com profile] dear-massacre for supporting my attempts to write darker
  • Team Pear and Team Crystal for the shenanigans and encouragement

If I didn't list you, it's because my memory is bad, not because of a lack of appreciation.
